Embracing the Past, Shaping the Future: A Conversation with Guntajdeep Singh

Imagine strolling through the vibrant streets of the Punjabi Market and being greeted by a mural that seems to speak directly to your soul. This mural, created by the talented Guntajdeep Singh, is more than just a splash of color on a wall. It's a window into the bliss of life's simplicities and a testament to the universal human experience. Guntajdeep says, "The mural is supposed to be a reminder of something fundamental about our existence." For those from India, it evokes a deep sense of nostalgia, connecting them to their roots and inspiring a sense of radical hope for the future.

New Horizons: Current Projects

Guntajdeep is always on the move, exploring new creative avenues. Right now, he's diving into a photo-book that features his series 'Sar'e-aam' (OPENLY). This project, supported by a grant from the Canada Council, captures intimate moments in the lives of desi folk who challenge conventional morality, especially regarding sexuality and love. "I was lucky and honored to get a grant from the Canada Council to work on this project," he shares with a sense of gratitude.

But that's not all. Guntajdeep is also working on another photo series and a couple of short film projects. He hopes to kick off these projects this year. On top of his visual art endeavors, he's developing a Desi lifestyle and apparel brand. This brand encapsulates the joy and emotion of being rooted in Panjab, allowing him to give back to his heritage. And if you think that's impressive, he's also in a band called 'Hazar' (@writtenbyhazar on Instagram). They're working on putting out new music, blending traditional and contemporary sounds.

An Evolutionary Journey: From Mural to Masterpieces

Reflecting on his journey, Guntajdeep recalls a pivotal moment when Jas Lally, the curator of Murals in the Market, reached out to him. "I was just starting to put myself out there as an artist," he remembers. The opportunity to paint a mural in the Punjabi Market was a game-changer. It not only put him on the map but also allowed him to connect deeply with the community. "I've gained a lot of confidence since then," he admits. This project helped him believe in the intertwining of life and art, propelling him forward in his journey as both an artist and a human being.

Upcoming Exhibitions and Collaborations

Exciting times lie ahead for Guntajdeep. His photo-book, which features the poignant poetry of Vancouver's own Roshni Riar, is one of his most anticipated projects. "Her words will move so many lives. I just know that," he says with conviction.

Additionally, his work will be showcased at a 3-4 month show and pop-up shop in Lowell, Massachusetts. This event, organized by Ravleen Kaur (@shopnavaa) and curated by Ravjot Mehek Singh (@ravjotmehek), will feature South-Asian, Indo-Caribbean, and Middle-Eastern art and communities. Running from June to September, it's set to be a vibrant celebration of diverse cultures and artistic expressions.

Inspirations and Evolving Style

Guntajdeep's work is ever-evolving, mirroring his growth as an individual. "I am driven by the need for change, a shift in how we live and how we look at the possibilities of the future," he explains. His current projects often blend traditionalism with modernism, creating a unique aesthetic that's both timeless and contemporary.

Words have also become an integral part of his art. "I have started believing that words are very important and sometimes, things need to be said more directly, less metaphorically," he shares. This shift has allowed him to challenge himself linguistically, adding depth and clarity to his work.

Guntajdeep Singh's creative journey is a beautiful blend of heritage and innovation. From his poignant mural in the Punjabi Market to his diverse range of projects, he continues to inspire and connect with his audience. His evolving style and unwavering dedication to his craft remind us of the transformative power of art. As we look to the future, let's support artists like Guntajdeep who are shaping our world with their creativity and vision.
