The Cypress of Unity: The Power of Art in Community Spaces

In the vibrant heart of Vancouver’s Punjabi Market, a mural by artist Mohadese Movahed stands as a beacon of unity and resilience. This public art piece not only beautifies the neighborhood but also serves as a powerful symbol of collective strength and hope. Mohadese's journey as an artist is one of inspiration and dedication, and her work in the Punjabi Market is a testament to the transformative power of art.

The Symbolism Behind the Mural

Mohadese’s mural in the Punjabi Market carries a profound message. "My mural in the Punjabi Market symbolizes unity in the face of darkness and hardship," she explains. The mural features three cypress trees, standing tall and strong, representing individuals coming together for a common goal. The unified form of the trees at the top reflects the collective effort of Iranian individuals and groups who join and remain resilient to bring about change. This powerful imagery serves as a reminder of the strength found in unity and the importance of standing together during challenging times.

New Horizons: Current Projects

Art is a constantly evolving journey, and Mohadese is always exploring new horizons. "Besides working in the studio and preparing for future solo and group exhibitions, I will be working on two mural projects in Vancouver and Abbotsford this summer," she shares. These new projects are an exciting continuation of her public art endeavors, bringing her unique vision and voice to more communities.

The Evolution of an Artistic Journey

Reflecting on her journey since completing the mural in the Punjabi Market, Mohadese emphasizes the growth and opportunities that murals have provided her. "Murals provide painters with an excellent opportunity to elevate their skills and challenge their critical thinking," she says. The mural she created for the Punjabi Market Collective was her first hands-on mural experience. It gave her the confidence, courage, and motivation to pursue more mural projects in the future, helping her understand how her work resonates with a public audience. This experience has been pivotal in shaping her artistic path.

Exploring New Themes and Styles

In her current work, Mohadese delves into new themes and styles. "In my new painting series, I have focused on exploring the psychology and politics of the built environment and its complex dynamics," she explains. Her new paintings depict urban scenery that encourages viewers to reconsider their presence in the city and think critically about the spaces they inhabit. This shift in focus and approach reflects her deepening engagement with the world around her and her desire to provoke thought and dialogue through her art.

Exciting Upcoming Exhibitions

The future is bright for Mohadese, with several exciting exhibitions and collaborations on the horizon. "I am part of a group exhibition at the Reach Gallery and Museum celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Emerge program," she shares. This exhibition will be on display until 2025. Additionally, her previous body of work, "The Burden of Street," will be featured in a touring exhibition around various communities in Saskatchewan by the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils (OSAC) in 2025. She is also working on a new body of work to be exhibited in a solo show in Montreal in the next few months. These upcoming projects highlight her growing recognition and the expanding reach of her art.

Supporting Artistic Endeavors

The role of artists in society is more crucial than ever, and Mohadese emphasizes the importance of community support. "As psychological, social, and political issues intensify, the role of artists and the importance of their work have become increasingly evident," she says. Through their creations and the conversations they generate, artists help us endure the challenges of today's world and further explore the complexities of these issues. It is therefore crucial to provide platforms for their voices and opinions to be heard.
