Artist statement—

“Uprising Sonata”, is the title of the mural in the Punjabi Market in which several cypress trees are depicted next to each other and grown in close proximity, creating a unified, interconnected, and upward-reaching form at the top.

Rooted in Iranian culture, the cypress tree holds profound symbolism, extensively woven into Iranian art, poetry, and garden design. The cypress tree’s long lifespan and its ability to withstand harsh weather conditions have rendered it a symbol of resistance and endurance, just as Iranian people have been resisting various forms of oppression throughout their country’s history. The unified and cohesive form of the tree at the top metaphorically represents unity and references the collective effort of Iranian individuals and groups joining and staying strong together to bring about change.

The tree is placed in a desert-like environment, replicating Iran’s plateau and its arid and semi-arid landscapes. With a serene glow that illuminates the darkness of the night, the moon depicted in the mural embodies hope during challenging and difficult times, providing light, guidance, and energy needed to navigate through the darkest circumstances.

“The cypress tree symbolizes resistance…just as Iranian people have been resisting various forms of oppression.”
