Artist statement—
I wanted this project to be a visual exploration of community, identity, and belonging. The peacock functions as a cultural placeholder and is a metaphor for the South Asian diaspora. The cherry blossoms + mountains provide a visual link to the landscape of Vancouver and anchor the piece in the contemporary moment.
The cultural hybridization that occurs because of immigration, is something I wanted to celebrate. While acknowledging that my community was uprooted, we persevered and cultivated a new home.
Himalaya Restaurant is a longstanding pillar of the Punjabi Market and an emblem of a thriving and diverse community. Partnering with them is a wonderful way to revitalize local businesses, while also creating work that will function as a cultural relic for future generations.
“…public art this really magical ability to bring people together…”
